Our Process For Reviewing Sportsbooks

We review sportsbooks because while many of them are fairly similar, it’s the differences that are important, and you may not be able to see them at a glance. There’s a lot you need to know before choosing which sportsbook to use, before you even get to where you can find the best odds. In our review process we consider the following criteria when looking at a sportsbook.

How Should You Choose the Sportsbook for You?

You need to ask yourself a series of questions that our sportsbook reviews can help you answer:

Once you know the type of bettor you are, you can start to dig deeper into the sportsbooks and see which ones you like the best. Are you going to be betting on the NFL more than any other sport? If so, which site has the best and most frequent NFL promos? Is there an edge you can get anywhere in NFL odds?

It could be that you don’t care about any of the major sports and want to use whichever sportsbook offers the largest variety of other sports to bet on, or you could see everything else as equal and just want to use the site that you deem most intuitive. First find out where you can get the best bang for your buck, then pick the site that best suits your needs and you’re the most comfortable with.

How Do We Rank the Sportsbooks?

We rank our sportsbooks based on how well they fare in key areas of our review process. The specific categories we give grades on are:

The grades in our reviews are based on our actual experiences with each online sportsbook site and app. Any pain points found when using the site or app were noted as we want to give you the most accurate representation of each sportsbook that we review.

LEGAL BETTING BY STATE

Arizona

18 legal sportsbooks operate in Arizona and according to the law there, there is still room for two more. Sports betting is becoming increasingly popular in Arizona thanks to the live, in-stadium sportsbooks that are partnering with the professional sports teams in the state. FanDuel has a sportsbook inside the FootPrint Center where the Phoenix Suns and Mercury play, Caesars has a live sportsbook at Chase Field where the Diamondbacks play, BetMGM will have one soon at State Farm Stadium where the Cardinals play, and DraftKings is going to set up something similar outside the Scottsdale golf course.

Arkansas

In February 2022, Arkansas’ ruled to allow online sports betting and expand the betting capabilities in the state beyond just three live casinos. Currently there are only two online sites you can use in Arkansas to place your sports bets: Southland’s Betly, and BetSaracen. The more popular brands seem to be reluctant to open up in Arkansas as they’d have to A) partner with one of the three casinos there and B) split 51% of their revenue with said casino. As far as online betting goes, Arkansas has a pretty slim variety, but more online sportsbooks will likely open up in the future as the law allows a total of eight online operators. Four major sportsbooks: Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetMGM all have ties to Arkansas and could potentially be the next ones to open up.

Connecticut

Online sports betting became legal in Connecticut back in May 2021 when Governor Ned Lamont made a deal with the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes. The two tribes plus the lottery made 3 spots available for online sportsbooks. The Mohegan tribe partnered with FanDuel, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation partnered with DraftKings, and PlaySugarHouse managed to snag the last available spot, partnering with the lottery.

Colorado

Though the sports betting vote only narrowly passed in Colorado, the state has become one of the leaders in online sports betting. There are 26 different sportsbooks bettors can use in Colorado including the big ones: DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, and FanDuel, and they have room for even more. Colorado is home to 33 retail casinos and every sportsbook needs to partner with one of them to become operational.

Illinois

Illinois brings in a ton of money through online sports betting. They are regularly top-5 in both dollars bet and tax revenue. Sports betting in the state became a lot simpler early in 2022 when their in-person registration rule was lifted. Bettors can now sign up comfortably from their homes, like in most states. Illinois currently has seven operational sportsbooks operating online: Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, Fanduel, and PointsBet.

Indiana

Indiana was quick to legalize sports betting and even quicker to make retail and online sports betting operational. Legalization happened in May 2019 and then the first live sportsbook opened in September followed by online sportsbooks a month later. Indiana currently has 14 operational online sportsbooks: Bally Bet, Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Betway, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, TwinSpires, Unibet, WynnBET, Hard Rock, and MaximBet. The law allows for up to 40 platforms for online sports betting so that list could get even bigger until they reach their limit.

Iowa

Iowa has been accepting bets since the summer of 2019 and was one of the early states to legalize online sports betting. Even though Iowa has no professional sports teams in any of the major US sports, Iowa bettors love to bet. It’s one of the cheapest states for a sportsbook to get a license, and that’s why there are already at least 18 operational today. The full list includes: Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Betway, Caesars, DraftKings, Fanduel, Fubo, Hard Rock, PointsBet, Unibet, and more. New sportsbooks are always popping up in Iowa.

Kansas

Kansas hit the ground running once they officially legalized online sports betting. The Law passed in the beginning of July and they were up and operational with six online sportsbooks (DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, FanDuel, PointsBet, and Barstool) by September 1st, in time for the start of the NFL season. The law allows for up to 12 online sportsbooks to operate in the state so expect more to be operational soon. The sportsbooks also have live locations at Kansas casinos as each casino is allowed to have up to 3 sportsbook platforms operating in a retail fashion.

Louisiana

Louisiana is one of the only Southern states to have both legal online and in-person sports betting, and has many more online options than neighboring Arkansas. The state currently has eight sportsbooks operational (Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, and WynnBet), but allows for a total of 41 different sports betting apps. While sports betting has been legal in Louisiana since November 2020, nine of its 64 parishes did not approve the law and therefore you cannot bet online in: Caldwell, Catahoula, Franklin, Jackson, Sabine, Union, West Carroll, or Winn.

Maryland

Maryland took an entire two years between voting to legalize sports betting in 2020 and launching the first operational online sportsbooks. It was a longer “go-live” period than any other state, but they’re up and running now. The law in Maryland allows for up to 60 online sportsbooks and 30 retail sites so there will be no shortage of options for Maryland bettors. Right now, Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, and PointsBet are live in Maryland, and Betfred, BetPARX, and Fanatics are expected to launch soon. The only things you can’t bet on in Maryland are high school sports and specific non-sport events.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts was allowed to accept its first bets on March 10, 2023, six days before the start of the NCAA Tournament. Currently, the state prohibits bets on regular-season games involving in-state schools, such as Boston College, Harvard, UMass, Northeastern, and Boston University. Massachusetts bettors can wager on the state’s schools for tournament games. BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, WynnBET, Barstool Sportsbook, Betr and Fanatics Sportsbook are all operative in the state.

Michigan

Legal sports betting began in Michigan in 2020 at the MGM Grand in Detroit, and then about a year later, DraftKings became the first operational online sportsbook in the state. Michigan now has 15 sportsbooks up and running including: Caesars, BetMGM, BetRivers, FanDuel, PointsBet, and Sports Illustrated Sportsbook in addition to DraftKings. 15 is the limit according to state law so don’t expect any new books to open up any time soon.

Nevada

Nevada, the gambling capital of the United States, somehow fumbles the bag in a very odd way when it comes to online sports betting. Although they were the first state to offer online sports betting and have 10+ online sportsbook options, they require bettors to register for an online account in-person and a physical casino. As you can imagine, that wasn’t the most convenient situation during the COVID pandemic. Nevada offers multiple Nevada-specific sports betting sites like Atlantis Sports Nevada and B-Connected Sports, but also some of the industry standards like BetMGM and Caesars.

New Hampshire

Your online sports betting options in New Hampshire are limited to strictly DraftKings. They are the only mobile operator in the state, though a few retail betting locations have sprouted since New Hampshire launched online betting back in December of 2019. There are a few online platforms that could start operating over the next year, but it doesn’t seem like New Hampshire is in any kind of hurry to launch more new sportsbook sites.

New York

No state takes more bets per month right now than New York. With nine online sportsbooks to choose from (Caesars, FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, DraftKings, PointsBet, BallyBet, WynnBet, and Resorts World Bet), New York is slowly becoming the most popular state for sports betting. New Jersey is the standard for gambling and sports betting on the East Coast, but New York is eating into that just a bit. New Jersey still has 24 available sportsbooks compared to New York’s nine, but a large percentage of New Jersey bets were made from New York bettors and that number is slimming down with the growth of online sports betting in New York.

New Jersey

New Jersey was the state that made this all possible, and they’ve been one of the most successful states in online sports betting since. New Jersey brings in more total betting money on a month to month basis than any other state. They currently have 21 operational online sportsbooks including: DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, BetRivers, FanDuel, and PointsBet. They also have the capacity for 20 more according to the law. In New Jersey, you can bet on professional or college sports, however, you are prohibited from betting on in-state collegiate programs like the Rutgers mens’ basketball team, for example.

Ohio

It’s been a long time coming, but Ohio finally launched online sports betting on New Year’s Eve 2023, and no less than 16 sportsbooks were operational within the first month. In the next few months, that number can be as high as 25. Ohioans love their sports teams and love to gamble on them. BallyBet partnered with the Cleveland Browns, Bet365 partnered with the Cleveland Guardians, Betfred partnered with the Cincinnati Bengals, Fanatics partnered with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Underdog partnered with the Cincinnati Reds, and Instabet partnered with the Pro Football Hall of Fame. All other online sportsbooks are partnered with casino establishments.

Oregon

Oregon is another minimal option state, but you can place sports bets online. Up until 2022, you were able to bet via the lottery app, but for over a year now, Oregon switched from the lottery app to DraftKings. DraftKings is the lone operator in Oregon, but there are Native American casinos with retail sports betting operations.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania legalized sports betting right away back in 2018 and had it online by mid 2019. Despite the taxes, the fees, and the limit of 14 total online sportsbooks allowed, Pennsylvania has the 5th largest population in the US and two huge sports cities in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. So it consistently pulls in big money from online sports betting. Right now in Pennsylvania you can use: Barstool, BetAmerica, BetFred, BetMGM, BetRivers, Betway, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, FOX Bet, Parx, PointsBet, SugarHouse, and Unibet. It’s a nice selection but as that’s 14 brands, they’re maxed out.

Rhode Island

Given its small size, Rhode Island doesn’t generate much revenue from online sports betting. It doesn’t help of course that Caesars is the only available online platform to use. It used to be even more inconvenient when you were required to sign up for an online account at a live casino location much like you have to do in Nevada, but that hassle is no longer required according to Rhode Island state law.

Tennessee

Tennessee was the first state to legalize online sports betting even though the state has no retail sportsbooks, and no plans to create any. Right now there are nine online sportsbooks operational in Tennessee: Action 24/7, Barstool, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, TwinSpires, Wagr, and WynnBet. Fubo Gamin was also approved but not launched yet. There’s plenty of room for more sportsbooks in Tennessee. All online sportsbooks operational in Tennessee have a mandatory hold requirement of 10% on every bet.

Virginia

Before 2018, Virginia wanted nothing to do with gambling. They had no casinos or any type of betting venues, and the one horse racing track they had closed in 2013. When Virginia voted to legalize online sports betting because of the money it would bring it, they also ultimately voted to create land-based casinos in the state. Virginia has come a long way. The state allows a maximum of 18 online sportsbooks to operate, and right now they’ve got: Bally Bet, Barstool, BetMGM, BetRivers, Betway, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, Hard Rock, PointsBet, Sports Illustrated, Unibet, WynnBet, Bet365, and Betfred.

Wyoming

Wyoming is the second state (Tennessee) to legalize online sports betting without having any retail sportsbooks. Right now, the “big 4” online sportsbooks (DraftKings, BetMGM, FanDuel, and Caesars) are available in Wyoming, and at least one more is expected to open up. The law in Wyoming requires at least five different brands to have licenses and generate competitive odds, but there is no cap on how many total platforms can be operating in the state so there is definitely room to grow.

Washington, D.C.

The District of Columbia is not really the best place to bet on sports, but it is technically available. GamBetDC is run by the lottery and is the one app you can use for sports betting. The problem is the app won’t work on any federal properties, which are kind of difficult to avoid in the nation’s capital. Additionally, since the only app available is DC specific, the odds you can get are generally poor as they face no competition. In the last couple years though, retail sportsbooks have gone up at sports venues in the area. Caesars opened a sportsbook bar at Capital One Arena where the Wizards and the Capitals play, and BetMGM opened a similar establishment at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals.

West Virginia

The way it works in West Virginia is that each of the five retail casinos can partner up with up to three online sportsbooks, meaning there can theoretically be a total of 15 sportsbooks in the state. Right now West Virginia bettors have seven online options for sportsbooks: Barstool, Betly, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, Fanduel, and PointsBet. Though they were one of the first states to offer online sports betting back in December 2018, they’ll likely never be one of the biggest betting states due to their size and their 15 sportsbook limit.

Which States Will Have Legal Sports Betting Next?

Maine

Maine legalized sports betting in August of 2022 but actual betting is not quite operational. It’s a slow process, but the next step is the four federally recognized tribes in Maine partnering up with four online sportsbooks. We don’t know yet which sportsbooks will be available, but our best guess is that they’ll be operational in Maine in mid to late 2023.

Nebraska

Nebraska has legalized retail, in-person betting, but little to no progress has been made in having operational, online sports betting sites in the state. In-person betting should be available by the beginning of 2024.
