OVERVIEW

FanDuel is a sportsbook, fantasy sports provider, casino, and online horse racing provider centralized in the US. Founded in 2009, FanDuel gained popularity as one of the two major players in DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports); the other main competitor in this respect is DraftKings.

In 2016, the two companies planned to merge before being stopped by the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). The reason behind this blockage was that the merger would have resulted in the company owning over 90% of the daily fantasy sports market, which directly contradicts US monopoly laws.

Outside of daily fantasy, however, sports betting at FanDuel alongside horse racing is prevalent. In 2018, FanDuel officially partnered with Irish bookmaker Paddy Power Betfair, now known as Flutter Entertainment. This merger gave FanDuel access to $150 million and TVG/TVG2 horse racing channels.

Around this time, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was unconstitutional. With this ruling came more wiggle room for gambling providers.

Just days after the merger, Paddy Power Betfair opened its first FanDuel-branded physical sportsbook at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey. March 2019 saw another branded sportsbook open up at the Valley Forge Casino Resort in Pennsylvania.

These days, FanDuel is a household name with official partnerships directly in the sports industry, including the NHL (National Hockey League). It is one of the most popular names in fantasy sports as well as sports betting in general. Although only available in a handful of states, it is expanding at a rapid pace. Players prefer it for its excellent selection of bonuses, user-focused site experience, and its reputation as a trustworthy broker.

✦ FANDUEL’S BONUSES AND PROMOS ✦

Welcome Bonus

The first deal that you’ll likely use at FanDuel is its welcome bonus. To take part, you must deposit at least $10 when you create your account. This FanDuel sign-up bonus allows you to bet risk-free up to $150. A risk-free bet refers to the amount of money you’re allowed to wager for your first bet that will be refunded to you in the form of site credit.

Refer-A-Friend

The ‘Refer-A-Friend’ program is a FanDuel deposit bonus that is dependent on your location; you can only invite someone from the same state that you play from. Many of the other state-specific deals can be found in the casino section of the website.

This deal will give both you and your friend $50 each for the sportsbook and $50 for the casino. To start this process, you must first click on the ‘Refer-A-Friend’ icon at the top right of your screen. This will present you with your unique referral link.

Once your friend follows this link and places a wager of at least $10, you’ll receive the reward. The $10 wager will unlock the bonus for sportsbook or casino depending on where they wager; they’ll be able to receive both bonuses. Referred players have 28 days to fulfill the bonus requirements.

NBA First Basket Insurance

The NBA First Basket Insurance promotion is opt-in only, meaning you’ll need to access it from the ‘Promotions’ page. This deal will require you to place a pre-live first basket scorer wager, which prompts you to pick the first scorer in eligible NBA games. If your choice doesn’t fulfill these requirements, but is within the first three scorers in the game, you’ll receive your wager back as site credit up to $25.

Parlay Insurance

FanDuel offers parlay insurance for a few different sports and leagues, including the UFC, NHL, and multi-sport bets. If you place a parlay bet on any eligible games or matches with at least five legs, you’ll receive up to $25 as site credit if precisely one of those legs fails.

$50k March to the Top Leaderboard

Similar to other sportsbooks, FanDuel offers specific deals depending on which sports season we’re in. One such bonus is the $50K March to the Top Leaderboard promotion that runs alongside March Madness. For every winning wager of at least $10, you’ll earn points to climb the leaderboard. At the end of the tournament, the leaders will be eligible for excellent prizes.

FanDuel Over/Under

The FanDuel Over/Under promotion allows players to access a shared prize pool during NBA on TNT broadcasts. You must submit an over/under ticket on the covered game or games by the end of the first quarter to enter. The shared prize pool for every broadcast is $5,000. If there are multiple winners, they’ll need to split that amount.

✦ FANDUEL USER EXPERIENCE ✦

FANDUEL WEBSITE

The FanDuel website is optimized for a premium user experience. The home page has all of the information you could need neatly displayed. You’ll be able to immediately see which games are being played on any given day while even limiting your search to popular events.

At the top of the page will be navigation tabs for live events and promotions. At the top right of your screen, you’ll find your current balance as well as an option to initiate a deposit or withdrawal. You may also access your account menu by clicking on the icon featuring a silhouette of a person.

Your bet slips are to the right of the home page. You can immediately switch between current slips, new slips, and your history in this window. The site takes a sleek and simple design route, and it pays huge dividends. Nothing on the site is hidden in any capacity and all pages have equally impressive loading times.

The only part of the site that may be a slight headache to find the first time is customer service. To access this, you must select the player icon at the top right of your screen and scroll to ‘Contact Support’ rather than being a pop-up window as some sites prefer.

FANDUEL APP

The FanDuel app takes the design elements that work on the website view and import it to your phone. The seperate tabs and areas like your bet slips, the casino, and your account menu are now easy-to-select icons at the bottom of the screen. You can also add and withdraw from your balance under the account tab at the bottom of the screen.

It may take some time to get used to these changes if you’re a veteran of desktop gambling. The app can be downloaded for both Apple and Android devices. The iOS version is available directly through the Apple App Store and takes advantage of technology like facial recognition to make login even quicker. The Android app can be downloaded directly from the FanDuel website.

FANDUEL’S KEY FEATURES

Odds Boost

You’ll find two types of boosts at the FanDuel sportsbook: Odds Boosts and Super Boosts. These are picked by FanDuel itself and occur every single day. Odds Boosts are slightly less intense than Super Boosts, but both of them up the odds of certain games and outcomes.

Refer A Friend Program

The Refer A Friend program is a great way to get more people in on the action. You’ll be able to send your unique referral link to a friend in the same state you play in and both of you will earn rewards. After your friend makes a wager of at least $10 in the sportsbook and casino, both of you will receive $50 in the respective category.

Vast Game Selection

FanDuel offers over 15 unique sports, each with hundreds of daily games and multiple leagues to choose from. Universal games like soccer have upwards of 30 leagues and countries to choose from for international play. It’s easy to switch between all of these games, and most have promotions specific to them.

CREATING AN ACCOUNT

To create an account with FanDuel, you’ll first be prompted with a table that asks you which state you’re playing from. It uses accompanying geolocation software to ensure you are who you say you are and maintain the platform’s legality. The states offered in this list are Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Look for this list to expand as more states follow suit and online sports betting becomes more widely legalized.

After selecting your state, you’ll automatically be brought to the ‘Create an Account’ window. Alternatively, if you already have an account, this is where you can opt to sign in instead. The information required on this page includes your email address, a username, and a password rated on its strength. Once this information has been processed, you’ll be prompted to verify your identity. This process requires new players to put in their title, legal first name, last name, address, city, state, zip code, date of birth, phone number, and the last four digits of your social security number. Additionally, this page allows you to initiate two-factor authentication, which is one of many features FanDuel implements to ensure security while using its platform.

You’ll need to confirm your personal information, and then you’ll be able to enter a FanDuel sign-up bonus code. Use code ‘BESTPROMOCODE’ to unlock access to a variety of new user bonuses. There are different deals for each part of its site (Fantasy, Sportsbook, Casino, and Racing).

The sportsbook deal is a risk-free bet up to $1000. The terms of this deal include requiring this bonus on your first bet. You’ll only receive the $1000 if your wager loses; if you bet on multiple outcomes, this will be applied to the first. The bonus will be added to your account within 72 hours of placing the qualifying bet.

Other sign-up bonuses include a deposit bonus of up to $500 for Fantasy games, a $200 risk-free bet for casino, and a deposit match of up to $50 for racing. Out of these four, the sportsbook promotion is the most lucrative, though the conditions are more specific as it requires the bet to lose.

✦ BANKING AT FANDUEL ✦

The cashiering at FanDuel, overall, is well-rounded and convenient. The payout and deposit times are virtually instantaneous outside of a few more niche options. When we discuss payout time in this review, we’re referring to the time it takes for winnings to be posted in your account.

You’ll also find an excellent assortment of spending control options. FanDuel is a large company that is dedicated to the individual experience. They have options for you to set your own boundaries and limits, as well as the potential to step in and help you through its ‘Timeout’ feature.

Withdrawal options aren’t nearly as varied as deposit methods are, but you’ll find a classic lineup of options here. Read below for more specific information regarding the cashiering experience available through FanDuel sportsbook.

Deposit options

FanDuel offers a wide variety of deposit options. You’ll be able to make deposits with online banking, credit and debit cards, PayPal, wire transfer, cash-at-the-counter, cash with PayNearMe, and a FanDuel Prepaid Play+ card. Each of these has its own specific minimums and processing times.

When it comes to minimums, most payment methods start at $5. The two exceptions to this rule are cash-at-the-counter and a Play+ card. You can only pay cash at the counter if the state you live in has an in-person FanDuel sportsbook. The minimum for this option is $50. For Play+ cards, the minimum is doubled from the original to $10.

Additionally, the maximum deposit for FanDuel’s payment options typically caps at $25,000. This is the max for online banking, credit and debit cards, PayPal, and wire transfers. Play+ cards and PayNearMe have lower caps of $2,000 and $500, respectively. While playing with cash at the counter, you can spend a maximum of $50,000.

All deposit times are instant except for wire transfers and PayNearMe. Wire transfers can take up to 24 hours in some cases, whereas PayNearMe takes about 15 minutes. Keep in mind that most credit and debit cards outside of Visa and MasterCard may block any deposits.

Payout times

The payout time at FanDuel sportsbook is nearly instantaneous. After an event or match has concluded, you can expect to immediately see your winnings reflected in your account balance. However, in certain cases, it may take a few hours for the balance to update. If this issue persists for more than a day, make sure to contact customer service and be prepared to include your account number and the ticket in question.

Withdrawal options

To withdraw funds from your FanDuel account, you’ll need to prove your identity first. You will need to verify your mailing address, birthday, and social security number. This helps with verifying your identity and also makes filing your taxes and reporting winnings much easier. The three ways that you can withdraw funds from your FanDuel account are PayPal, online banking, and check.

Additionally, during the processing time, FanDuel will run anti-fraud checks on your account and playing patterns. If it suspects a user to be guilty of fraudulent betting, FanDuel has the right to deny your withdrawal request. You may not withdraw promotional funds that haven’t met the requirements yet. FanDuel may deny withdrawal requests if you still have a deposited balance in your account; this is part of the anti-fraud checks system.

The processing time of your withdrawal will differ greatly between the three methods. PayPal is by far the fastest, with an advertised processing time of 48 hours. Next comes online banking, which can clear within two to four business days. By far, the slowest of the bunch is receiving a check in the mail. This can take anywhere from seven to ten business days. At the time of writing, there are no withdrawal minimums enforced by FanDuel.

Spending control

FanDuel has a premium assortment of spending control options, all of which can be found under its ‘Responsible Play’ page. You can set deposit limits, which require you to place a cap on how much you can add to your account over a certain period.

For contests, you can set up notifications to let you know if you’ve exceeded a certain number of them, as well as lock your account after a certain number of contests. Additionally, you can add a maximum entry fee to your account to prevent larger wagers. If you’re really struggling, you can set a timeout period or self-exclude from player in certain states.

You’ll have the option to self-exclude at intervals of three, six, nine, or 12 months. Under your account menu, you’ll be able to follow the self-exclusion link to submit your form. During this period, you’ll be unable to place any bets. Any existing wagers will be cancelled and refunded. You also won’t receive any promotional emails during this period to avoid any conflicts of interest. You can always contact customer support directly to extend or discuss the terms of your self-exclusion.

PLATFORM SECURITY

FanDuel is dedicated to security in multiple avenues, the first of which is its vulnerability disclosure policy. This rewards players who alert staff to potential areas on the site that can be abused. This includes specific pages, contests, promotions, and others. Additionally, FanDuel is partnered with HackerOne, which can accept these tips for a reward. Players who are rewarded for finding a vulnerable area on the site can make the Hall of Fame of Security on its site.

To maintain the security and legitimacy of the platform itself, FanDuel has rules in place that ensure no players can take advantage of the system. These rules include not allowing FanDuel staff to participate in DFS and barring players from owning multiple accounts.

FANDUEL’S HOLD

Vig/Juice: The tax/commission a sportsbook charges for taking on your bet. Take odds of -110 (some of the most common in sports betting). While it’s true that these odds mean that a bettor must wager $110 to win $100, it also means that the sportsbook is netting $9 in profit regardless of the outcome of the bet. Taken off of every bet over the course of a standard sports season and the profits begin to add up.

Hold: Similar to the vig, the Hold is the percentage that sportsbooks keep for every dollar wagered. While it is not necessarily imperative to know what the hold is in order to place a bet, it is something that bettors should be aware of as it differs according to bet type. Bets with an outcome of only two possible choices (such as moneyline or spread bets), the hold tends to be lower. However, bets with multiple possible outcomes (such as futures for example) can and usually do have higher holds.

While FanDuel tends to be a largely advantageous sportsbook in terms of their hold/vig, this amount is subject to change across different sports! For example, NFL lines tend to be closer to the traditional -110, while MLB lines have at times opened much higher.

KEY ADVANTAGES FOR FANDUEL

FanDuel offers the major advantages of accessibility and navigability in the world of online sportsbook betting. Its site can be accessed both from mobile devices and your desktop, which is standard at the time of writing. However, FanDuel has the added bonus of making those two experiences nearly identical; regardless of how you choose to use its site, you’ll be able to do so effectively. Its app also takes advantage of mobile tech like facial recognition to make it even easier to get your wagers in before game time.

The site itself is easily navigable. The only aspect of the site that may take some getting used to is the separation between its sportsbook, fantasy application, and casino. Sometimes the FAQs you find through Google may bring you to the wrong one, so just double-check that when looking for particular answers. Likewise, the applications for each section are completely separate.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of choosing FanDuel is its sheer size. It is one of the biggest online sportsbooks available to players from the US, and as such, takes advantage of partnership opportunities. This leads to incredibly unique promotions such as its NBA Over/Under deal that accompanies the NBA on TNT broadcast.

The refer-a-friend program is also fairly unique to sportsbooks and allows you to bring friends into the fold, and both take advantage of up to $100 in deposit bonuses. If you’re wondering why you should bet with FanDuel, it is in the ways that FanDuel connects you and your friends to discounted gaming experiences.
