Best College Football National Championship Bets

It feels like we’ve been headed toward this since Week 1 of the college football season. Alabama vs. Georgia. A rematch of the 2017 National Championship, as well as this year’s SEC Championship. Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide took both of those games. Will Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs be able to exact some revenge and win the school’s first title since 1980? Or will Alabama win back-to-back titles and their seventh of the Saban era?

More importantly, which team will cover the spread? And how else can we make money on this, the final college football game for eight months? These are our three favorite bets:

Alabama vs. Georgia Spread

The Bet: Georgia -3 (-105, DraftKings)

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett (13) gets set to run a play during the first half of the Southeastern Conference championship NCAA college football game between Georgia and Alabama in Atlanta, on Saturday, Dec. 4, 2021 | Sidelines

Like the SEC Championship game, this selection comes down to whether you believe the Georgia defense or the Alabama offense will carry the day. Last time, Heisman winner Bryce Young was able to pick apart Georgia’s defensive backs, and the Bulldogs gave up 24 more points to the Crimson Tide than they did to any other opponent this year. But that game meant very little to Georgia, who had already ostensibly clinched a spot in the playoff. It meant everything to Alabama, who was out of it without a win.

Ultimately, Georgia’s defense is too talented to let that happen again, and Alabama’s offense isn’t talented enough to catch them off guard again. We like Georgia to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball – like they did against Michigan in the playoff semifinal – which should open up the run and give QB Stetson Bennett enough time to find open receivers.

His exceptional play against Michigan ought to give him the confidence he needs to manage this game appropriately. If he can do that, minimize the mistakes, and let the better unit do what it does best, Georgia will emerge victorious. As long as the spread doesn’t tick past three, we feel confident the Bulldogs will cover.

Alabama vs. Georgia Total

The Bet: Under 51.5 (-108, Sugar House)

If you like the Bulldogs, you sort of have to play the under here, but even if you’re backing Bama with the points, it’s easy to make the case for a low-scoring affair.

First, for Georgia: It’s hard to imagine Bennett outdueling Young. That just hasn’t been this team’s m.o. this year, even when Bennett is the superior quarterback. Georgia is 31st in the country in rushing play percentage and 34th in time of possession.

Alabama, meanwhile, throws the ball quite a bit more, yet they’re superior to Georgia from a time of possession perspective – 18th in the county. And both teams rank in the top ten in the country in defensive yards per play.

Both of these coaches are smart (no pun intended), and they know the way to take this one home will be to tire the opposing defense out and strike once that happens. Someone will be able to do that – we think Georgia – but in either scenario, the under is the play.

It’s the last game of the season. If you want to get a little crazy, bet your prediction for the final score and see if you can score big heading into the dreadfully long college football offseason.

We like Georgia 17-Alabama 13. Here’s how the game script goes.

It’s a low scoring affair for the first half as both teams attempt to establish the run and feel each other out. Georgia leads 7-3.

Bama adds another field goal on the first drive of the second half, but Georgia answers with an explosive pass from Bennett to TE Brock Bowers on its next drive to open up an eight-point lead, 14-6.

Alabama puts its first touchdown on the board at the end of the third when Young hits Jameson Williams in stride for their own long touchdown, making the score 14-13. Georgia adds a field goal midway through the fourth, and the Crimson Tide are driving with two minutes left to try to score a game-winning touchdown.

On third and ten from Georgia’s 25-yard-line, Young drops back, and LB Nakobe Dean gets through a gap on a blitz. He sacks Young, who loses the football, and Georgia recovers to seal the win and the title. The defense converts. You cash the biggest ticket of the season. 17-13.
