In addition to a full 15-game schedule and a Yankees-Red Sox battle on Sunday night in Fenway, today also brings the announcement of the full AL and NL all-star game rosters. Does it get much better for baseball fans?
Well, if you’re a gambling fan, it can be better if you tail our best MLB best for the day. We can’t resist taking a side on Sunday night, and we’ve got two other tasty tips for this summer afternoon. Good luck:
New York owns a 4-2 win-loss record against their arch rivals so far this season, including wins in two of three preceding games in this series. Jameson Taillon, who takes the mound for the Yanks tonight, hasn’t faced Boston yet in 2022, but Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta has faced New York once, giving up four earned across 5.2 innings, including two homers to Giancarlo Stanton and Anthony Rizzo.
Ultimately, not much needs to be said about this year’s Yankees team. It’s playing at a historic clip through the first week of July, and while this Red Sox team is good, especially at home, it’s not hitting nearly .300 as a team this month like New York is. You’re getting a nice discount because of the quality of opponent and maybe their history together, but don’t get fooled into fading these Yankees until their play regresses to something of this planet.
The Reds have won both games against the Rays in this series so far – the first in a “balk off” and the second via a walk off. We’re guessing, but it’s probably the first time that’s ever happened?
Nevertheless, the Rays are the far superior team and should have at least won Saturday’s contest. They surrendered a three-run lead in the eighth inning and blew the victory again by failing to close things out while a run ahead in the tenth.
Today, Shane Baz gets the call, and he’s been phenomenal of late – three earned runs over his last 22 innings and a 26-6 K to BB ratio. Hitting-wise, Tampa is a top ten team against lefties, and they get rookie Nick Lodolo in the fifth start of his career. He’s been quite good, but we like Tampa’s chances to make his Sunday unpleasant.
The Tigers struggled mightily yesterday against a hard-throwing White Sox right-hander, Johnny Cueto. They had just five hits (and no earned runs) through eight innings against Cueto, and to close the series, they draw an even harder-throwing rightie in the form of Michael Kopech.
It’s been a rough couple starts in a row for the youngster, but this is the perfect bounceback opportunity for him. The Tigers bat just .218 vs. righties, the second worst such average in the league. That includes four innings of two-hit ball against Kopech back in April.
On the other side, Detroit will throw out reliever-turned-starter Drew Hutchinson, in what will likely be a relatively short start, but he’s been solid for the Tigers since emerging from his bullpen role. His ERA has dropped from 4.91 to 4.30, and in April, he threw two shutout innings of relief against the White Sox. It’s a small sample size for sure, but he can be effective and very easily combine with Kopech for an eight-run-or-less game on Sunday.
